Artist ReflectionIt's probably not the most subtle song that I've ever written, but the message is not exactly subtle in itself. I opened up the Catechism, looking for the meaning of life, and it's in the first couple of sentences. I figured, why beat around the bush? Sarah Hart and I had been at a conference in L.A. and a speaker sparked something in me that led me to, "I wanna live, I wanna love..." Sarah, asked me if I was working on some songs or anything and I said, "Yeah, actually I am. You want to help me?" Asking Sarah if she wants to co-write is like asking her is she wants to breathe. So, we sat down and basically before I could tune my guitar, Sarah had a verse and was typing like crazy. So, the song came together pretty quick. Then a visit with Matt Maher a few weeks later inspired me to change the chorus. While he was tweaking one of his own songs, in my head I heard the deacon say, "Now let us go forth to love and serve the Lord." 2+2 does equal 4, Ben Franklin was right about the light bulb, so I changed the chorus to "We live to love, to serve . . ." God has been so faithful to me, to reach into my broken, backwards existence and love me anyway. Even when I try to prove him wrong about me, he still finds me lovable and wants to know me. It's that place inside that no one else even knows about where my Savior waits to meet me and work miracles. How could I make a return for the goodness of God: my shelter, my refuge, my stronghold in whom I trust? And Joshua summoned the people and said, If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the river or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. (Joshua 24:15) Every day we have a choice. No sense in trying to hide it. We live to LOVE and SERVE the Lord! - Curtis Stephen |
